Statutory Report Series Legislative Report on Charter Schools 2019-2020

This descriptive report from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Charter Schools Team provides insight from a survey of districts about the decision-making and reasoning behind the charter school approval process for the 2019-2020 school year. This approval process consists of two parts: (1) concept approval in the charter development stage and (2) contract approval in the charter implementation stage. Eighty-three percent of schools had concepts approved; eighty-eight percent of schools further along in the process had contracts approved. School districts reported that both concept and contract approval was related to schools attracting students and presenting an alternative type of schooling.
